GLOBALink | Roads rebuilt by Chinese company bring convenience to Sri Lankan villagers
COLOMBO, March 29 (Xinhua)
A rural road reconstruction project contracted by a Chinese company in northern Sri Lanka has greatly improved local residents’ travel conditions.
For historical reasons, northern Sri Lanka is less developed than the rest of the country. Most of the villages in the area are connected by potholed roads.
In March 2020, China State Construction Engineering Corporation began to widen and pave the roads with asphalt in the Vavuniya area in the region.
Vavuniya is an area with a scattered population of around 200,000 and the total construction length of the roads is about 100 km scattered in different villages.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Tamil): SATHISHKUMARA NARGESHWARAN, Villager
“The roads used to be bumpy and full of potholes which turn into puddles when it rains. Now the roads have been rebuilt. It’s a great help for us to get around quickly. After reconstruction, the roads become very neat, and also stand taller than before. If all the roads in the village were rebuilt like this, it would benefit everyone.”
Manchuria Devi Theruvarural Nesan, principal of Maraharampalai Vinayakar Viththiyalayam School, says the newly paved road next to the school has brought great convenience for the 250 students and their parents.
SOUNDBITE 2 (Tamil): MANCHURIA DEVI THERUVARURAL NESAN, Principal of Maraharampalai Vinayakar Viththiyalayam School
“After the road was rebuilt, it only took me 10 minutes to get to school from my home. Previously, it would take 30 minutes. For many parents and students, this project has really brought them a lot of help and convenience.”
