Indian gov’t cancels class 12 board exams in wake of COVID-19

NEW DELHI, June 1 (Xinhua) — India’s federal government Tuesday said in view of the uncertain conditions due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic class 12 board exams would not be held this year.
The decision was taken by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a meeting.

“In view of the uncertain conditions due to COVID-19 and the feedback obtained from various stakeholders, it was decided that class 12 board exams would not be held this year,” reads a statement issued by Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

“The Prime Minister said that the decision on class 12 Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) exams has been taken in the interest of students. He stated that COVID-19 has affected the academic calendar and the issue of board exams has been causing immense anxiety among students, parents and teachers, which must be put to an end.”

According to PMO, it was decided that CBSE will take steps to compile the results of class 12 students as per a “well-defined objective criteria” in a time-bound manner.

The prime minister’s decision came at the end of a key meeting held on Tuesday on the issue of class 12 exams, which was attended by several key ministers.

India is witnessing a resurgence in COVID-19 cases and the second wave of the pandemic has posed a challenge for the country. In April this year due to a spike in COVID-19 cases, the Indian government cancelled class 10 board exams and had postponed class 12 exams. Enditem
