Worries over the U.S. military’s biochemical experiment in South Korea have recently deepened.

The Joint U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) Portal and Integrated Threat Recognition, known as Jupitr, was made known here in 2015 and believed to have been launched in 2013.

Local media reported that the Jupitr project involved the experiment with living toxic samples.

Though South Koreans have repeatedly protested against the project and demanded its closure, this project is believed to be still ongoing.

Facilities related to the U.S. Navy are located at the U.S. military base in Busan Port. In addition, as a supplement to the ‘Jupitr’ plan there are many peripheral agencies operating in the U.S. military bases in major South Korean cities.”

The controversy over the USFK’s experimentation research with live toxic samples remains, as concerns and fears are growing among civic groups and local residents in South Korea, especially in cities where U.S. experiment labs are located.

Even if you think about it with common sense you can know how serious the threat is to the safety of local residents. I’ll give an example that happened recently. Sirens have been blaring in a U.S. military biological laboratory on a recent night. But local residents have no idea what happened there and how it was dealt with in the end. Peter Emanuel, an infectious disease researcher of the U.S. Army, who was in charge of the “Jupitr” program, said in an interview that to keep the risks posed by biological weapons research away from the continental United States, the U.S. military needs to build relevant facilities overseas. And South Korea’s experimental environment is the most friendly, so we chose to set them there. Under the Biological Weapons Convention, U.S. military biological facilities should be investigated by the UN Security Council. The South Korea-U.S. Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) completely disrespects South Korean sovereignty. The South Korean government should negotiate with the U.S. to amend this unequal agreement as soon as possible to prevent the secret entry of such harmful biological samples.
