Messi ‘eager’ to lead Inter Miami at expanded FIFA Club World Cup
Lionel Messi said his expectations for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States will be different to those at past editions when he participated with former club Barcelona.
The Inter Miami captain was part of the Barcelona teams that won the competition in 2009, 2011, 2015.
This year’s tournament, which kicks off on Saturday, features an expanded 32-team format and will be played over four weeks in 11 U.S. cities.
“Having the chance to be part of it is exciting,” Messi told FIFA on Friday. “The expectations I have are different to the ones I had when I played for other teams, but I’m eager and I look forward to competing against the best [teams] and doing well.”
Inter Miami will begin its campaign against Al Ahly at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday before also facing Palmeiras and Porto in the group stage.
Messi said the involvement of clubs from each of FIFA’s six confederations would offer a unique experience for players and fans.

De Bruyne joins Napoli on free transfer after Man City exit
Kevin De Bruyne has ended his 10-year spell at Manchester City and joined Napoli as a free agent, the Serie A club confirmed on Thursday.
De Bruyne arrived at Manchester City from German side Wolfsburg in the summer of 2015. Over 10 seasons, the Belgian midfielder helped the club win six Premier League titles, five League Cups, two FA Cups, and a UEFA Champions League trophy. He made 422 appearances for City, scoring 108 goals and providing 170 assists.
The 33-year-old’s contract with City was set to expire this summer. Although he received lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia and Major League Soccer, he opted to stay in Europe to continue playing at a high competitive level.
Napoli edged out Inter Milan to claim its fourth Serie A title in the 2024-25 season. At Napoli, De Bruyne will reunite with his Belgium national teammate Romelu Lukaku.

Real Madrid continues summer spending with Mastantuorno from River Plate
Real Madrid has confirmed the signing of Argentinean teenager Franco Mastantuono from River Plate.
The Spanish club has held off stiff competition from other major European clubs to sign the 17-year-old who just recently became the youngest player to ever represent the Argentinean national side.
The attacking midfielder has agreed to a six-year contract and will join Real Madrid in August after playing the Club World Cup with his current club.
River Plate has published details of the sale on its website, citing the total cost of the player for Real Madrid as 63.2 million euros (72.6 million US dollars).

Olympic champion Zheng reaches first career grass-court semifinal
China’s Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen reached the semifinals on grass for the first time in her career as she knocked out home sensation Emma Raducanu 6-2, 6-4 at the Queen’s Club Championships here on Friday.
Zheng, 22, entered the WTA 500 tournament as the top seed and received a bye in the first round.
She needed two hours and 11 minutes to beat McCartney Kessler from the United States 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 in the second round on Thursday and seemed to repeat the story on Friday as she was broken twice at the beginning of the second set.
Zheng suffered first-round exit at the Wimbledon Championships in the past two years, but she believed she has already gained more experience from the two matches she played this year.
