Argentina routs Brazil to seal World Cup spot
Defending champion Argentina secured a berth in next year’s FIFA World Cup by cruising to a 4-1 home victory over arch-rival Brazil on Tuesday.
Julian Alvarez, Enzo Fernandez and Alexis Mac Allister scored first-half goals before Giuliano Simeone added a fourth as the Albiceleste booked its place in football’s showpiece tournament with four qualifiers to spare.
The result leaves group leader Argentina with 31 points from 14 qualifiers, eight points ahead of second-placed Ecuador. Brazil is fourth in the 10-team South American zone standings with 21 points.

Arda Guler aims to fight for Real Madrid starting place
Real Madrid’s Turkish international midfielder Arda Guler has vowed to stay and fight for a regular starting place after struggling with playing time he needs in his first two seasons at the club.
The 20-year-old joined the Spanish giants at the start of the 2023-24 season, but although impressing in his brief opportunities, injury partly restricted him to just over 400 minutes football in all competitions.
This season has seen him play 642 minutes in La Liga, as well as starting in Madrid’s Copa del Rey campaign, but he is still behind players such as Jude Bellingham and Brahim Diaz in the pecking order.
In an interview with Spanish sports paper ‘Diario Marca’ Guler was asked whether he would consider leaving Real Madrid in the summer to try and play more often, but he insisted his aim was to triumph in the Santiago Bernabeu.
“Real Madrid gave me a plan, and I still believe in it. I’m sure I’ll succeed at Real Madrid,” said the midfielder.

China’s World Cup hopes fade after home defeat to Australia
China suffered a 2-0 home loss to Australia in a FIFA World Cup qualifier here on Tuesday, leaving its chance of securing a spot in the 2026 tournament in serious jeopardy with only two games remaining.
At the bottom of Group C with six points, China now has to go all out for wins over Indonesia and Bahrain in June to keep the World Cup dream alive.
“The next two matches are the key,” said China’s head coach Branko Ivankovic. “We must fight for victories.”
“It’s not a result we wanna see. Australia performed better in the first half and scored two goals, while we were the better side in the second half.

2025 Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup series to kick off next week in Bulgaria
The first leg of this year’s FIG Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup series will be held next week in the Arena 8888 Sofia Hall, officials said here on Tuesday.
As many as 87 individual gymnasts from 43 countries and regions, as well as 14 groups, will compete in the three-day event, which takes place on April 4, the Bulgarian Rhythmic Gymnastics Federation (BRGF) said in a press release.
