Bayer Leverkusen signs ex-Real Madrid defender Vazquez
BERLIN, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) — Bayer Leverkusen has signed Spanish defender Lucas Vazquez on a free transfer after his contract with Real Madrid expired at the end of last season, the Bundesliga outfit confirmed on Tuesday.
The 34-year-old has penned a deal until June 2027 and will wear the number 21 jersey for the Bundesliga outfit. Vazquez arrives in Leverkusen as a direct replacement for Jeremie Frimpong, who joined Liverpool earlier this summer.
The Werkself had previously pursued Jonathan Clauss from French outfit Nice, but negotiations collapsed over the transfer fee. With Vazquez, Bayer now secures an experienced and versatile option for the right flank.
“By signing Lucas Vazquez, we are bringing in a highly experienced player who has won everything there is to win over the past decade with Real Madrid,” said Bayer sporting director Simon Rolfes.
“His technical skills, tactical intelligence, and playmaking qualities will have a big impact on our team. He brings leadership, routine, and a winning mentality that will strengthen our squad.”
During his final campaign at Real Madrid, Vazquez remained an important figure. He featured in 32 La Liga matches, starting 25, and contributed one goal and five assists. In the Champions League, he made 10 appearances, scoring once and providing another assist.
For Vazquez, the move also carries a personal dimension. He acknowledged the influence of Bayer coach Xabi Alonso and his long-time teammate Dani Carvajal – who had a season at Leverkusen early in his career – in shaping his decision.

“I am excited to start this new chapter with Leverkusen,” Vazquez said. “This is a club with great ambition and hunger for success, and that matches my own mindset. I am looking forward to competing for titles together.”
In total, the nine-time Spain international amassed 402 competitive games for Real Madrid, winning 23 major trophies, including multiple Champions League and La Liga titles. The club officially honored him as “one of the great legends” during the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, where he made his final appearances.
