Barcelona midfielder De Jong suffers muscle injury
MADRID, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) — FC Barcelona coach Hansi Flick faces a minor injury crisis ahead of his side’s return to La Liga and its UEFA Champions League debut next week, after the club confirmed that Frenkie de Jong has suffered a muscle injury.
The midfielder had to be substituted during the Netherlands’ World Cup qualifier against Poland last Thursday, and Barcelona confirmed that he has “suffered a slight injury to the external obturator muscle in his right leg.”
The announcement doesn’t say how long De Jong will be out of action, but he is unlikely to recover in time for Sunday’s La Liga match at home to Valencia and will be a doubt for the team’s opening Champions League game away to Newcastle United on September 18.
De Jong’s injury comes with Gavi also out of action after suffering a knee injury in training before the international break, while left-back Alejandro Balde is also sidelined for around three weeks with a hamstring injury.
Gerard Martin is expected to replace Balde in the Barca defense, while Marc Casado started in midfield in the 3-2 win away to Levante and looks to be the most likely replacement for De Jong. ■
