China-Thailand railway brings Thais hope for convenience, prosperity
The China-Thailand railway, an important part of the trans-Asian railway network, will be Thailand’s first standard-gauge high-speed railway.
As its construction is in full swing, people expect the railway could make their life more convenient and prosperous.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): PANNAROS BOONSERM, Translator at the China-Thailand railway construction project
“I think the high-speed railway brings us hope. For example, the current project is from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima, which usually takes about two and a half hours by car, but it would be very convenient and time-saving once the project is completed. Transportation is very important to tourism, and good transportation will certainly bring more income to local residents. So I hope the high-speed railway between China and Thailand will open soon. When completed, it will be connected with the China-Laos Railway. I hope one day I’ll be able to take the high-speed train from Thailand through Laos and then to China’s Yunnan Province.”
As Thailand eased COVID-19 restriction measures, the construction of the railway has picked up speed.
SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): MA SHENGSHUANG, General manager of the China Railway Design Corporation (Thailand Branch)
“With a total length of 252.3 km, the China-Thailand Railway project adopts Chinese technical standards. The construction of the project is divided into 14 sections. At present, one section has been completed and three sections are open for bidding. The construction of the other 10 sections is advancing in an orderly manner.”
The China-Thailand railway is expected to not only inject vitality into the economic development of regions along the line in Thailand, but also strengthen the trans-Asian railway network and promote regional connectivity.
