Dortmund seeking Champions League momentum despite fan discontent
BERLIN, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) — The mood around Borussia Dortmund is more complicated than the league table suggests ahead of Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League match against Inter Milan.
Dortmund, the 2024 Champions League finalist, sits second in the Bundesliga and is pushing for a place in this season’s Champions League knockout stage. Yet despite the results, dissatisfaction lingers among sections of the fan base.
Coach Niko Kovac has delivered stability, even if supporters continue to crave a more expansive style of play. According to Opta, Dortmund has kept a clean sheet in 53 percent of matches this season. Ten of its 19 Bundesliga games have ended without conceding, the best record in Europe outside of Paris Saint-Germain.
Recent progress has also fueled optimism inside the squad, with attention turning to defender Nico Schlotterbeck, who has become increasingly influential since returning from injury.
Media reports have suggested the Germany international is close to signing a contract extension, though Schlotterbeck said he is taking his time. “I have a deadline, which I keep to myself for the time being,” he said. “I listen to my gut feelings, because I am an intuitive person.”
Schlotterbeck appeared rejuvenated after scoring in a 3-0 Bundesliga win over Union Berlin, following Kovac’s decision to allow him greater freedom to join attacks. “I am back up front, and I enjoy it,” the 26-year-old said.
Kovac had initially urged caution after Schlotterbeck’s months-long absence, limiting his forward runs. Ten matches later, Dortmund is benefiting from his aerial strength and increased threat from set pieces.
“Our football triggers good results, and we gain stability,” Kovac said, expressing optimism about securing the defender’s long-term future.
Dortmund officials are reportedly prepared to offer Schlotterbeck a deal through 2030 with a significant salary increase, though the player said his focus remains on this season.
Despite trailing Bundesliga leader Bayern Munich by eight points, the Bavarian side’s recent defeat at home to Augsburg has sharpened belief.
“If there’s the slightest chance, let’s take it,” Schlotterbeck said. “I want them to win the title as late as possible, not already in March.”
