1.9 mln Kenyans in arid areas face food insecurity
NAIROBI, June 18 (Xinhua) — Some 1.9 million people in Kenya are in need of food assistance, with the situation expected to worsen between June and August, the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) said on Tuesday.
“The situation is projected to deteriorate during the June-July-August season in some arid counties, except for only a few parts,” the NDMA said.
The agency observed that acute malnutrition has also been noted across the counties, with 847,932 children aged six to 59 months and 124,359 pregnant and breastfeeding mothers currently malnourished acutely and in need of treatment.
Across the Greater Horn of Africa, some 74.9 million people are highly food insecure and in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development. ■
