Daily COVID-19 death toll hits highest record since outbreak in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, April 25 (Xinhua) — Pakistan registered 157 deaths of COVID-19 over the last 24 hours, making it the highest single-day death toll since the outbreak of the pandemic in the country in late February of last year, according to the statistics issued by the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC).

A total of 790,016 cases of the disease have been detected in the country so far out of which 16,999 died and 686,488 recovered, the NCOC said.
Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry told media on Saturday night that the peak in the spread of the disease is caused by the negligence of the public.

He said that 80 percent of the public is not following the guidelines set by the government and the leadership will have no chance but to impose lockdowns in major cities.
“If COVID-19 cases keep on rising next week, we have to put aside financial concerns and economic losses and have to impose lockdown to save the lives of people,” he said.

The Pakistani army took charge of the duty to ensure compliance of the standard operating procedures (SOPs) set by the government, and will also assist provincial governments in the coming days, the NCOC said.

In a meeting on Saturday, the NCOC members deliberated upon proposed lockdowns in high disease prevalence cities.
“Decision on lockdown will be taken after deliberate discussion amongst all stakeholders. Purpose of lockdowns will be to contain disease spread through implementation of SOPs,” a statement from the NCOC said.

Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Science and Technology Shibli Faraz said Saturday night that currently the oxygen supply in the country is enough for hospitals, but if the health sector faced shortage of oxygen, they will suspend its supply to the industrial sector to meet the hospitals’ needs.
