Germany announces to buy Lockheed F-35 fighter jets
BERLIN, March 14 (Xinhua) — Germany would buy F-35 fighter jets by U.S. manufacturer Lockheed Martin to succeed the country’s aging Tornado fleet that was introduced more than 40 years ago, the Ministry of Defense (BMVg) announced on Monday.
The purchase would not undermine Germany’s joint plans with France to gradually replace the Eurofighter with an improved version by 2040 as part of the FCAS fighter system. “This means that important key technology remains in Germany and in Europe,” Minister of Defense Christine Lambrecht said.
Earlier in March, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz already announced a special defense fund of 100 billion euros (110 billion U.S. dollars) and to increase annual defense budgets to more than two percent of the country’s gross domestic product. (1 euro = 1.10 U.S. dollars) ■
